Terrence Trainor

Special Counsel

Terrence Trainor is a special counsel in our Family Law team and is based in the Brisbane office. He is an expert in international family law and is admitted to practice in Australia, England and Wales. He specialises in:

  • International family law
  • Binding financial agreements (pre-nuptial and post-nuptial agreements)
  • Cohabitation disputes
  • Child custody disputes

‘After gaining an early grounding in a broad range of areas including property, corporate, wills and estates, civil litigation and insolvency, I was quickly drawn to the complexity and challenge of family law. It’s an area that is constantly changing, and unlike commercial law it allows me to help people through very difficult times in their lives.’

Terrence moved to London in 2007 where he practised for nearly a decade in several specialist family law firms. He rapidly gained a reputation as a family lawyer who gets results, and most recently was head of the family law team at a leading Mayfair firm. During his time overseas, Terrence led cases that spanned multiple countries around the world, many of which included elements of specialist issues including Jewish and Sharia law.

Terrence returned to Australia in late 2016 to specialise in complex financial and children’s matters, often with an international or cross-jurisdictional element. He is an expert at assisting clients with binding financial agreements (both pre-nuptial and post-nuptial) and cohabitation disputes.

‘Clients come to me because they sense very quickly that I’m committed to working hard on their behalf to secure the best possible outcomes. They can also see that I draw on my knowledge of several branches of the law, such as trusts, company law, wills and estates, and property, to devise a considered and  intelligent strategy for moving forward. In this way, I’m very flexible when thinking about possible solutions to family law problems and always examine the issues in the case from multiple angles. This is particularly important for clients dealing with complex financial situations. Even more importantly, I never meet a client with a preconceived idea of their objectives. I spend time gaining an understanding of what is important to them, and then devise a legal strategy to achieve the best possible outcome.’

Throughout his career, Terrence has acted for a number of high-profile clients, including professional sportspersons, people working in the media and entertainment industries, City professionals and high-net-worth individuals.

‘Barry.Nilsson. has a very approachable culture, which clients sense as soon as they walk in the door. Our clients have quite busy and often stressful lives, and many manage their affairs across different cities, which adds to the complexity of their issues. A firm with offices across the country helps to make their lives easier during what is always a difficult time. It’s at times like these that clients need to rely on the highest-quality advice, but must also feel their affairs are in the hands of an expert.’
