Sophie Steele is a Solicitor in our Insurance & Health Law team and is based in our Melbourne office.
Sophie specialises in:
- Professional Indemnity
- Health Law
Sophie has acted for both domestic and global insurers, with a particular interest in financial lines claims, including in the areas of health/allied health.
She has been working in the insurance industry for a number of years, having begun my career working at a mid-sized insurance firm in Melbourne. During this time, Sophie has gained experience working across all areas of insurance law, including working in both the financial lines and general liability space.
"Having worked for a wide range of Insurers and their Insureds, I enjoy the intellectually stimulating aspect of the intersection between insurance and the law, whilst also balancing the emotional impact of the claim on the Insured. I find that it is crucial to engage with the Insured throughout all stages of the claim and therefore place strong importance on providing them with effective advice. This relationship built on rapport in turn leads to the most efficient way to defend and resolve claims."
Of significance, Sophie enjoys working with Professional Insureds. Often the nature of the claims against Professionals can be very personal to them, and therefore the ability to support the Insured through delivering high level defences and tailored advice can be intellectually rewarding and personally fulfilling.
"I was drawn to Barry Nilsson not only because its award-winning reputation in Insurance & Health law would enable me to work alongside some of the best lawyers in the industry, but also because of its reputation in ensuring that its staff are supported and recognised. I believe this strong emphasis on having a supportive work-place culture will provide me with an environment to develop and excel."
Sophie holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice. She is a member of the Law Institute Victoria (LIV) and Young Lawyers run through the LIV.
