Partner

Peter Harvey is a partner in our Insurance & Health team and is based in the Sydney office. He is a Law Society of New South Wales Accredited Specialist in Personal Injury and is a claims assessor for the Motor Accidents Compensation Scheme.

‘I have over 30 years’ experience in insurance. While I was studying law, I worked in the personal injury section at GIO, which gave me my first experience of the industry. After graduating, I joined a suburban firm where I gained experience handling both plaintiff and defendant work in the areas of personal injury, workers’ compensation and family provision matters. From there, I moved to a boutique insurance firm where I specialised in defendant work and continued to work in that area after we merged with a larger firm. Since 2003, I’ve worked as Claims Assessor for the State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA), which has given me an excellent understanding of how to assess and decide claims and how parties prepare for cases from both claimant and an insurer perspectives.’

Peter specialises in insurance claims relating to:

  • Compulsory third party (CTP)
  • Public liability
  • Workers’ compensation
  • Substantial economic loss
  • Fraud.

Peter has special expertise in managing and resolving major insurance claims relating to serious orthopaedic, paraplegic, quadriplegic and brain injury. In addition, he is well equipped to run matters involving infants with significant injuries and complex liability claims.

‘I have a genuine understanding of what insurers want and need in terms of how claims are managed. I understand their business, as well as the internal and external pressures they face. As a result, I’m able to deliver impressive and cost-effective results, which our clients value.’

Peter provides a range of value-added services for his clients, including mentoring client practice groups and regular seminars.

‘At Barry.Nilsson., I think we have an intrinsic understanding of our clients’ businesses, which means we understand what they are looking for when it comes to the management of claims. We also offer value for money, which is something that is paramount to insurer clients. Barry.Nilsson. is also a very innovative firm, but we do everything in a very consensual way. I think that in a lot of firms ideas are raised and shared, but not pursued. However, at Barry.Nilsson, the firm has a family feel and there is a sense that every partner is involved in decisions relating to change and development to deliver the best possible outcomes for our clients.’

Peter was recognised as a leading compulsory third party lawyer in NSW in the 2016 edition of Doyle's Guide.
