Nicholas Andrew

Principal

Nick Andrew is a principal in our Insurance and Health team and is based in the Sydney office.

‘After working for more than a decade at a large international firm advising both Australian and London-based insurers across major lines of insurance, I joined Barry.Nilsson. in early 2014 to assist the Queensland partners in setting up the Sydney office. It’s been very rewarding to watch that office grow into a team of more than 30 people.’

During a career spanning 17 years, Nick has focussed on handling strategically important claims, and manages a team of lawyers who specialise in:

  • Professional indemnity
  • Public and product liability
  • Property damage

Nick has particular experience in financial lines and complex construction and engineering matters. More specifically, he’s acted in disputes arising from significant infrastructure projects across Australia, resulting in large scale litigation and coronial inquests.

‘I believe my strength as a legal practitioner lies in my ability to provide clients with advice that is both strategic and pragmatic, particularly when it comes to navigating difficult disputes. I draw on my experience and commercial judgment to deliver early positive outcomes for my clients whenever possible.’

Nick has also handled claims brought against occupiers, councils, road authorities and contractors arising from motor vehicle accidents and train derailments, bushfires and floods, as well as from tunnel, bridge, wharf and scaffolding collapses. Although the bulk of Nick’s work is in litigation, he also advises insurers on policy coverage and product development.

‘I believe four factors set Barry.Nilsson. apart from other firms. First, we invest deeply in our relationships with our existing clients. Second, we make an effort to provide advice that is commercially astute. Third, we’re both responsive and cost-effective. Finally, and most importantly, although our teams are as large as, or even larger than, those in competitor firms, our clients always have direct access to the partners, whom they have entrusted to be the strategic leader on the file.’

Nick was recognised in the 2016 edition of Doyle’s Guide as a recommended professional indemnity and public liability lawyer in NSW.
