Kate Hughes

Special Counsel

Kate is a Principal in our Insurance and Health team and is based in our Melbourne office.

Kate specialises in health and medical law.

With more than 20 years’ experience, including 10 years with a major Australian medical defence organisation, Kate specialises in complex medical and health law matters, She has provided legal advice, representation, and support to a range of medical and health professionals across all facets of health law including civil litigation, disciplinary matters, coronial inquests, Medicare investigations, employment disputes and criminal matters.

Kate has also assisted health professionals respond to and resolve complaints made to the Health Complaints Commissioner, as well as assisting private and public hospitals in relation to civil litigation and inquests. Her most recent experience, as a Coroner’s Solicitor at the Coroners Court of Victoria, has given her valuable insight and understanding into the roles, and operation, of that jurisdiction.

Combining her legal experience with an earlier career as a registered nurse and midwife, Kate has a unique perspective and understanding of the Australian healthcare system, as well as an ability to communicate effectively with health practitioners at every level.

Kate has presented widely to health professionals, hospitals, and practice managers on medico-legal issues, and is currently engaged as a Teaching Associate in the School of Public Health at Monash University.

Kate is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria.
