Julia Turner

Special Counsel

Julia is a Special Counsel in our Insurance and Health team based in our Sydney office.

Julia has worked in insurance law since 2003. She began her career in the insurance group of national firm before moving to a boutique insurance firm. She is an experienced insurance litigator and, more recently, has focussed on financial lines coverage advice and disputes.

Julia acts for Australian and international insurers and specialises in:

  • Professional indemnity
  • Financial lines
  • Directors and officers
  • Policy construction and coverage disputes
  • Building and construction disputes
  • Reinsurance.

Julia has a particular interest in first party loss coverage advice for claims of employee theft. Julia has advised on some high value claims involving wide-ranging types of theft in different industries. Julia’s approach to coverage is to identify coverage issues at the earliest opportunity, to analyse all avenues available under the policy and at law to calculate liability and to ensure a fair outcome for insurers and their insureds.  

Julia is experienced in defending professional indemnity claims against lawyers, architects, engineers, valuers and accountants. She has also acted as coverage and monitoring counsel for excess of loss insurance exposures, for top-up insurers in relation to high-value claims, and in commercial litigation matters.

‘I enjoy delving into the detail of a complex claim and getting to the bottom of the key issues. For first party loss claims, I have often found that the insured has not only suffered a loss but has taken a hit on a personal and reputational level. I aim to assist my insurer clients maintain their positive relationships with insureds by raising indemnity issues at the earliest opportunity and communicating with brokers and insureds so as to ensure and open and fair resolution can be achieved on a timely basis.’

Julia holds a Bachelor of Laws and was awarded Honours.

Julia is a member of the Australian Insurance Law Association, Women in Insurance, NSW Claims Discussion Group and the NSW Law Society.

Julia is published in two insurance books for papers she co-authored, Insurance and Reinsurance, Jurisdictional Comparisons, European Lawyers Reference Series, Croydon, Thomson Reuters, 2012; and Essays on Tort, Insurance and Society in Honour of Bill Dufwa, Stockholm, Jure, 2006. Julia co-authored a paper published in the NSW Law Society Journal about the Federal Court judgment at first instance in the case of University of Western Australia v Gray. This was a case in which Julia successfully acted in the defence of a claim by a university against a publicly listed company in respect of ownership of intellectual property rights.
