Damian Clancy is a Special Counsel in our Insurance & Health team and is based in the Melbourne office.

'Barry Nilsson has a reputation in the market as a firm with impressive expertise and a progressive approach towards people management. BN appealed to me as the culture of the firm fits well with my own values.'

Damian specialises in:

  • Directors’ & officers’ liability
  • Professional indemnity
  • Complex claims (particularly policy interpretation disputes and shareholder class actions).

His clients include Australian and overseas insurers, including Lloyd’s syndicates and their insureds. Damian has extensive experience representing a variety of insureds including company directors, lawyers, conveyancers, architects, surveyors, engineers, accountants, doctors, psychologists and dentists.

"There are two things that interest me most about insurance law. First, I love the strategic and academic demands of the areas in which I practice. Second, I enjoy balancing the interests of insurers and their insureds. I work seamlessly with both groups of clients to develop early strategies which are both effective in containing cost and resolving the claim promptly."

Damian has been recognised in Best Lawyers for Insurance Law since 2021. In 2014 Damian was named 'Insurance Lawyer of the Year' in The Lawyers Weekly 30 Under 30. In the same year, he was also recognised as one of Australasian Lawyers’ 50 Rising Stars. Damian was awarded best speaker of the LIV Hanover Mooting Competition in 2013.

Damian holds a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and he is a member of the Law Institute of Victoria (LIV), Australian Insurance Law Association (AILA) and Australian Professional Indemnity Group (APIG).
