Clive Nichol

Partner

Clive Nichol is a partner in our Commercial and Property team and is based in the Brisbane office.

‘I began my career as a property lawyer in London, which is a terrific place to work simply because of the variety and size of the transactions. Working with a firm in the UK gave me a terrific grounding in the technical aspects of property law. After coming to Australia, I worked for a mid-tier firm before joining Barry.Nilsson., which had built up a reputation as one of Brisbane’s leading property firms.’

Clive has a well-earned reputation as an expert in the field of shopping centre leasing and management. In addition, he’s an experienced general property lawyer and has acted in the sale and purchase of some of Queensland’s major shopping centres. He has also assisted a large number of high-profile investors and developers with their matters.

‘I’m a very pragmatic lawyer and also make sure I’m always accessible. Most importantly, my advice is always to the point. I think a lot of lawyers make things more complicated than they need to be. Over the years, I’ve developed a deep understanding of the retail sector and, through that industry experience, I’ve managed to build some very long-term relationships with investor and developer clients. In a sense, we’ve grown together.’

His general commercial advice has helped some of Queensland’s most successful small-to-medium sized enterprises through every stage of the business development cycle.

Over the years, Clive has also developed a special expertise in airports, which has involved providing clients with advice in relation to terminal redevelopments, aviation-related leases and commercial agreements.

‘My work with airports began after the Gold Coast Airport was privatised back in 1999 and I was asked to help with a lease. The Gold Coast Airport was built around the concept of a low-cost carrier airport. We were always a good match because, at Barry.Nilsson., we unashamedly provide high-quality legal advice for a reasonable price. This initial work led to us receiving a lot of referrals and, as a result, we’ve acted for Townsville, Mt Isa, Rockhampton, Whitsunday and the Sunshine Coast airports.’

Clive’s interest in airports led him to set up Airport Document Solutions (ADS), which is the business unit the team at Barry.Nilsson. uses to assist airport clients with all the legal aspects of airport management, including leasing, property and commercial matters.

‘One thing that makes Barry.Nilsson. different from other firms is that the partners know each other well. We trust – and are honest with – each other and with our clients. And, while we all enjoy practising law and are very committed to providing the highest quality legal advice, we know there is more to life than law. I think that’s what our clients like about us. They know we see them as people first and clients second. As we grow into a national firm, we’re determined to preserve the Barry.Nilsson. model, which includes our values and culture. We’re not interested in turning into a large firm where there is no collaboration between the partners, because we know that our clients’ interests are best served when we draw on each other’s expertise.’
