Young insurance professionals award returns to recognise next gen leaders

Entries are now open for the second annual Next Gen Insurance Leader 2020 Awards, organised by law firm Barry.Nilsson. and Young Insurance Professionals (YIPs).

Launched in 2019, the award seeks to encourage and support the career development of young insurance professionals throughout Australia and New Zealand.

To be eligible, entrants must be younger than 35 or have less than five years’ experience in the insurance industry and be a member of YIPs. The winner will receive $5000.

To be in the running, individuals must submit a written essay exploring one of six topics including:

  • Global pandemics and insurance
  • Ethics in a crisis
  • Zero or hero
  • Class actions
  • The future of insurance
  • Future trust

Barry.Nilsson. principal Hubert Wajszel said it was important to recognise and nurture emerging talent in the insurance sector.

“We are delighted to partner with Young Insurance Professionals and support this worthy initiative for the second year running,” said Mr Wajszel.

“Winning a Next Gen Insurance Leader Award is an invaluable accolade that can be used to  boost an individual’s profile and build their professional network within the industry.”

YIPs president Katie Stephenson said she wanted to encourage all young professionals working in the industry to nominate.

“We want to recognise our rising stars who are working to move our industry forward by helping them improve their career and develop their leadership abilities,” said Ms Stephenson.

Last year’s winner, 23-year-old Emma Matteson from Sydney, said she never thought she would win after only having worked in the industry for three years.

“As a commerce graduate, I had no real career path but I chose the insurance industry because I thought it offered a lot of different opportunities,” said Miss Matteson, who works as a reinsurance underwriter.

“I am very passionate about the work I do and would encourage any young professional in the industry to go for this award. I have loved building on the relationships I have developed over the past year and the opportunities I have been given just from entering. Win or lose you get so much out of the experience.”

More information about the categories and how to enter is available here.

Winners will be determined by an independent panel of six judges and announced on 22 October 2020. Submissions close on 2 October 2020.
