Thursday, 26 August 2021
Barry.Nilsson. and Young Insurance Professionals are thrilled to announce the winner of the 2021 Next Gen Insurance Leader Award. Congratulations to Benjamin Briscoe of Allianz Australia for taking out the title, along with a $5,000 cash prize.
Now in its third year, the YIPs Barry.Nilsson. Next Gen Insurance Leader Award recognises innovative thinking, leadership potential and business acumen, and encourages and supports the career development of young insurance professionals throughout Australia and New Zealand.
The submission guidelines provided the opportunity to celebrate diversity of age and thought, and tackled some of the key issues that face the insurance industry, such as disruptors in the industry, globalisation, the increase in litigation, the post-COVID work environment and more. Amongst a strong group of finalist submissions, Benjamin produced an impressive paper exploring why insurers should adopt a targeted committee to safeguard the industry against risk complacency, instead of relying on historical data to model the future of the industry.
"We received a strong response to the Next Gen Award this year, and the calibre of entries was impressive, which made for a rigorous judging process," said Hubert Wajszel, Principal in Barry.Nilsson.’s Insurance & Health team and a judge in this year’s Next Gen Insurance Leader Awards.
"It's obvious that this particular topic - preparing for external threats and opportunities within the insurance industry - is one that really resonated with Benjamin,"
"His paper was extremely thought-provoking, he gave strong context around the commercial and real world application of the ideas and concepts he discussed, and articulated that very well," said Mr Wajszel.
Due to the current COVID situation, BN and YIPs were unable to host the annual Next Gen event, so winners were announced virtually.
"When I saw the opportunity to write a paper on uncertainty in the insurance industry and how we can prepare for it, I jumped at it because it’s a topic close to my heart and one I’m passionate about.” said Benjamin Briscoe, winner of the 2021 Next Gen Insurance Leader Award.
"With the world being turned upside down from COVID, and a lot of the traditional opportunities for professional development having been shut down, awards like this are critical."
"In particular, one of the things I’ve enjoyed most about the award was actually creating the space to think through the challenges." said Mr Briscoe.
Congratulations also goes to this year’s finalists, Matthew Bailey (Willis Towers Watson) and Paige Lowman (Aon) for the remarkable submissions they provided.
This year's panel of esteemed judges included 2020 Next Gen Insurance Leader Award winner Simon Bogli (JLT Public Sector), Shaun Standfield (IAA), BN’s Hubert Wajszel and Simon Black, and YIPs committee members, Jacqueline Wilson and Justin Micale.
