Senior appointments strengthen Barry.Nilsson.’s growing liability practice in Melbourne and Sydney
21 August 2018
National law firm Barry.Nilsson. has further strengthened its award-winning insurance and health team, announcing today two senior appointments to its expanding public and products liability offering. Katie Swain joins the firm as a consultant in the Melbourne office, and Christian Breen joins as a special counsel in Sydney.
Ms Swain has worked exclusively in insurance for 14 years and specialises in property damage liability and recovery claims. A former partner at a leading Australian law firm, she has particular expertise in matters involving the building, construction, energy, retail and commercial sectors. Earlier in her career, Ms Swain worked for an international insurance and reinsurance practice in London.
Having worked in insurance law and litigation for 10 years, Mr Breen’s expertise is in general liability, aviation liability, and complex litigation. He represents Australian and international corporate clients and primarily acts for listed and unlisted public companies, large private companies and government enterprises operating across a broad range of industries including aviation, retail, strata, tourism and hospitality. Mr Breen has worked with most major international and local insurers and brokers, as well as many corporate insureds and self-insureds, conducting complex liability and insurance litigation Australia-wide, and through most of the Asia Pacific, the USA, Italy, the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
Welcoming the two new appointments, Barry.Nilsson. Managing Director Don Leembruggen said that as the firm continues to grow, its focus remains on recruiting talented and client-centric lawyers.
“Both Katie and Christian are leaders in their fields and welcome additions to our ever-expanding national liability team,” Mr Leembruggen said.
Ms Swain and Mr Breen follow the recent appointment of senior lawyers Carolyn Coventry (special counsel, Sydney), Corrina Dowling (special counsel, Melbourne) and Jacob Luca (senior associate, Melbourne). Barry.Nilsson. Chief Operating Officer Andrew Price said the appointments were a reflection of the firm’s expanding insurance offering in response to strong client demand.
“With offices in six states, Barry.Nilsson. offers a genuine national presence consisting of leading insurance and health practitioners Australia-wide,” Mr Price said.
“Developing our national offering was not something Barry.Nilsson. rushed into. Finding the highest quality people in each state was a critical part of our growth strategy.”
Barry.Nilsson.’s insurance and health team was recognised in the 2017 Doyle’s Guide, with 25 individual solicitor listings and 17 firm listings, including as a Leading Public & Product Liability Law Firm (Defendant) across five states. They have also been nominated as a finalist for ‘Professional Services Firm of the Year’ in the annual ANZIIF Australian Insurance Industry Awards, after previously taking out the top spot in 2016 and 2017.
