Entries open for Young Insurance Professionals Award

Wednesday, 6 April 2022

Championing the outstanding achievement of young insurance professionals in Australia and New Zealand, entries for the 2022 Young Insurance Professionals (YIPs) and Barry.Nilsson. (BN) Next Gen Insurance Leader Award are now open.

Now in its fourth year, BN Principal and 2022  panel judge Simon Black said it’s important the industry supports and recognises the career development of its future leaders, awarding the winner a $5,000 cash prize.

“This award recognises innovative thinking, leadership potential and business acumen, encouraging and supporting the career development of the industry’s young professionals and future leaders,” Mr Black said.

“To be in the running, entrants must be aged 35 or under at the time of submission, and work in an area directly connected to general insurance, display innovative thinking and commercial application.”

Applicants must submit a 2,000-word written paper, exploring one of five questions covering topics including digitalisation, natural disaster protection, corporate social responsibility, insuring the uninsurable, and shaping the future of insurance

“With some very timely topics for entrants to choose from, we’re looking forward to reading the creative approaches of our young professionals,” Mr Black said.

“Not only is this an opportunity to be recognised by the industry, it is also an opportunity to creatively apply innovative thought processes to relevant real world insurance issues facing the market.”

Ben Briscoe, 2021 Next Gen Insurance Leader Award winner and panel judge for 2022, said the topics provide the space for an exciting breadth of ideas.

“I expect we’ll see a strong consideration of the balance between the social and commercial aspirations of insurances and how these can be balanced in an evolving environment,” Mr Briscoe said.

“It’s important to build a curious mindset early in your career and continue to exercise it every day, so opportunities like the Next Gen Insurance Leader award allow participants to develop those skills.

“Although I haven’t yet spent my cash prize from last year, my advice to those entering this year’s award is to not underestimate the power of storytelling - the most effective messages are those that can concurrently appeal to both the emotive and rational sides of the brain.”

Nominations for the Next Gen Insurance Leader 2022 Award are now open, closing midnight Thursday 28 April. For more information and to enter, visit https://yips.org.au/next-gen-insurance-leader/.

The winner will be determined by an independent panel of six judges and announced at a celebratory event in Sydney on Friday 27 May.
