Barry.Nilsson. bolsters national offering with 8 promotions
Wednesday, 15 December 2021
National law firm, Barry.Nilsson., today announced eight promotions across its national network of offices, continuing to lay the foundations for its next generation of leaders.
Effective from 1 January 2022, the firm has promoted two principals, four special counsel, one senior associate and one associate across the firm’s Insurance & Health and Family Law teams.
The newly appointed principals have been named as Nicholas Bell (Sydney) and Stewart Boland (Brisbane), both highly experienced insurance lawyers.
The appointment of Mr Bell and Mr Boland to principal progresses the firm’s strategy to provide a truly national offering across its core lines of business in the Insurance & Health sector.
Having taken a lead role with BN’s public liability practice in Sydney, Mr Bell joins the principal ranks as the Sydney team’s first dedicated Casualty principal. Previously working alongside Principal Nicholas Andrew, who was recently named Lawyer’s Weekly Insurance Partner of the Year, Mr Bell will now lead a team of dedicated casualty lawyers on matters relating to public liability matters, including sexual abuse, catastrophic injury, claims involving injury to minors, property damage and construction liability claims. With more than 12 years’ experience in insurance law, Mr Bell has acted for a number of insurers, self-insureds, not-for-profit organisations, religious and youth institutions and government agencies.
Drawing on many years of experience to establish a busy CTP focused practice, Mr Boland will now lead the firm’s dedicated Queensland CTP team in his new role as Principal. With more than 20 years’ experience in CTP claims across both the Northern Territory and Queensland, Mr Boland has significant experience in all aspects of motor claims involving CTP personal injury claims as well as property damage claims.
Joining the two new principals in this round of promotions are four special counsel who have been named as:
- Bianca Ponting (Insurance & Health, Brisbane)
- Hannah Shiel (Insurance & Health, Sydney)
- Phillip Thomas (Insurance & Health, Sydney)
- Matt Hempstead (Family Law, Brisbane)
They are joined by Ashlea Hawkins (Insurance & Health, Melbourne), promoted to Senior Associate, and Demi Peters (Insurance & Health, Tasmanian), promoted to Associate.
Chairman of the Board and Lead Insurance & Health Principal, Rhett Kennedy, said the appointments recognise the firm’s commitment to investing in the next generation of leaders across both its insurance and family law practices.
“From an insurance perspective, our focus continues to be about consolidating and strengthening our national offering,” said Mr Kennedy.
"Our focus has always been on finding the right people who share our values and bolster our client-centric culture, and supporting them to grow with the firm as our future leaders."
The two new principals join the firm’s existing 31 principals and over 300 staff in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Hobart.
Barry.Nilsson. CEO, Graeme Walsh, commented: “These promotions illustrate the substantial investment we are making across our practice groups to ensure we have excellent lawyers with outstanding technical skills for the benefit of our clients.”
“I congratulate our new principals and everyone promoted in our team on their success, and thank them for their significant commitment to the firm and their consistently high standard of client service.”
