Courts of the future - BN's Family Law team participate in a virtual trial in the Family Court of Australia
In a first for our clients, BN’s Geoff Sinclair and Matt Hempstead participated in a two-day trial in the Family Court of Australia via video-link.
The Microsoft Teams platform utilised by the Court allowed all relevant parties to be viewed on screen (and where necessary heard) at any one time. It also allowed simultaneous document sharing.
The video-link trial offered a number of advantages, including:
- The convenience for our client to be in familiar surroundings in our office boardroom,
- Our client’s barrister appearing from their chambers interstate (saving on the usual travel and accommodation expenses),
- The other legal representatives and their client being in their office, and
- The Judge appearing from a separate location.
Our participation in the trial confirms our view that there is significant benefit to the Court utilising virtual resources not only in the short term, but also into the future. We envisage that technology could be used in family law matters involving international or interstate travel, as well as helping balance the Court’s workload with the potential for a judge being able to hear a matter from anywhere in Australia.
We invite you to get it touch if you would like to talk to us about the video-link trial or the other ways we are utilising technology to assist our clients.
