Self-insurance

We undertake work on behalf of clients who choose to self-insure or where the amount of the deductible specified in the policy (either liability, professional indemnity or construction works) is sufficiently high that many claims fall within this amount. We develop strong relationships with these corporations and develop an appreciation of our clients' business operations, goals and claim strategies. We act for many companies and operations including:

  • The owner of a major Queensland shopping centre portfolio
  • Power station operators
  • Mining companies
  • Local authorities
  • The operator of a large hotel and casino chain
  • Hospitals
  • A national construction and building material supply company
  • An international conglomerate
  • An Australian engineering and service provider
In undertaking this work, we provide our clients with broader risk management advice and ways to prevent or better manage future claims.

Some recent matters we have been involved in include:
  • Advising power station operator on terms of reinsurance policy and assisting with negotiations to modify the terms of the policy to suit our client's operations
  • Acting for self-insured operator of licensed premises in high profile injury claim by local celebrity
  • Providing contractual advice to a large conglomerate with respect to insurance and indemnity provisions contained in a labour hire contract
  • Managing a portfolio of claims for an international company with respect to its labour hire workers
  • Managing medical negligence claim made against self-insured hospitals and health professionals arising out of complications following operative procedures and late discovery of those complications
  • Acting for self-insured host employer where a labour hire employee suffered multiple injuries over a period of time whilst working for different employers
